Is An Outdoor Fireplace Right For You?
By Dave Kettner

In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of homes that feature a variety of outdoor fireplaces.  These popular additions allow for families to enjoy the adventure of an outdoor fire at anytime of the year.

The Outdoor Fireplace:  What Works Best?

One type of outdoor fireplace that is very in demand is the Chimineas.  This is a freestanding outdoor fireplace that can be made from metal, cast iron or even ceramic materials.  The size of the Chimineas can be determined by the amount of space available.

This is a popular choice in outdoor fireplaces because it can be so versatile in size.  Even the smallest patio can accommodate a Chimineas.  Depending on the style, a person can select a very ornate fireplace or a simply designed one.  Whatever you’re personal taste, this form of outdoor fireplace is a good choice.

Another benefit of the Chimineas is the fact that the fire itself is contained inside of the Chimineas.  There is no fear of ash flying from the fire, as there is a chimney that the smoke is funneled through.  Roasting marshmallows is still possible, but concerns with getting burned or having stray ash start a fire are minimal

with this type of outdoor fireplace.

Some people are now going for a traditional outdoor fireplace.  This can look just like an indoor fireplace but be built right on a deck or patio.  Often they are made from brick or stone that ascents the surrounding environment.  Again, this can be good a choice as the fire is contained, but still gives off heat and a sense of coziness.

The fire pit is another form of outdoor fireplace that many have built into their patios.  A fire pit can be connected to a gas line for easy start and control of the fire.  The fire pit is generally uncovered and more like a campfire.  This works for many people but does allow children to be close to the fire and the possibility of ash being dispersed.  There are covers that can be purchased that screen in the fire.

The outdoor fireplace seems to be a continuing trend.  For many being able to sit by a fire and not only enjoy the warmth but the outdoors is a relaxing and fun endeavor.  There are many companies that can help design and assist in making the decision on what type of outdoor fireplace is right for you.  Check online and at area stores for more information.
